In recent times, there has been a noticeable decrease in the accessibility of clean water, especially in areas near wetlands and coastal regions. This decline can be attributed to the rapid increase in population, advancements in technology, and expansions in industries, all of which have significantly affected the quality and quantity of available water resources. Desalination has emerged as one of the most sustainable alternatives to traditional water sources and has gained popularity in recent decades. The use of membrane technology for desalination and water purification shows great promise, with ongoing developments in materials and methods driven by advancements in science and technology. An exciting area of research involves the application of the electrospinning technique to create nanofibers that can be used as desalination membranes. Therefore, this review focuses on the recent developments in materials used for the electrospinning technique. It covers topics such as the characteristics of the electrospinning apparatus, the desirable properties of membranes for the desalination process, and the performance of electrospun nanofiber membranes in desalination. Additionally, this review addresses the challenges and future perspectives in developing electrospun membranes for desalination processes.
