Bacterial leaching of zinc from flotation tailings of the Zawar Mines Plant, Udaipur, India was investigated in the laboratory using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in batch experiments. The objective was to determine the efficiency of zinc extraction under controlled pH conditions. With pH maintained in the range of 3 to 4, our results showed a zinc extraction rate of 70-78% within 24-28 days at a 5% pulp density. Interestingly, zinc extraction via bacterial leaching accounted for approximately 60% of the extraction achieved through combined chemical and bacterial methods. Moreover, settled raw sewage was identified as a beneficial nutrient source for the bacterial leaching process; a mixture of 2:1 sewage to tap water at pH 4 achieved a notable 65% zinc extraction in 28 days. These findings underscore the potential of bacterial leaching as a viable method for recovering zinc from low-grade ores and waste materials, especially under conditions where traditional recovery methods may be less effective.
