This paper presents a comparative study of static converter AC input power factors (P-F) and their improvement techniques. The converters examined include the phase-controlled AC to DC converter, the pulse width modulation (PWM) AC to DC converter, and the AC input current shaped AC to DC converter. The objective is to inform converter users about the power factor characteristics of different converters, thereby assisting in selecting the appropriate converter types for specific applications while adhering to professional standards regarding permissible levels of electromagnetic interference. The methodology involves calculating the power factors using Fourier series for the aforementioned converters and simulating the results with MATLAB. The analysis reveals that the PWM converters, which have currents in phase with voltage, demonstrate superior performance compared to the other converter types. The simulated results, presented in this paper, provide valuable insights for comparative studies on power factor correction techniques in engineering applications.
