The study investigates the alumina (Al2O3) pickup in various mold fluxes utilized for continuous casting of aluminum-killed steel, revealing that the Al2O3 pickup in slag ranges from 7 to 12 percent, influenced by slag basicity. It identifies a significant polynomial relationship between increased Al2O3 pickup and basic slags, impacting steel cleanliness. The research highlights the effect of chemical composition on the microstructure evolution and Al2O3 partitioning during crystallization, detailing the microsegregation of Al2O3 inclusions in the constituent phase of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 based slag films. Furthermore, the study documents the constitutional segregation of Al2O3 inclusions affecting the Al2O3 pickup phenomena during the continuous casting process. Notable findings include the segregation of alkalis such as Na and K in an Si-rich interdendritic matrix, while fluorine (F) was retained in the dendrites across all slag types examined. Metallographic evidence supports the investigation into Al2O3 inclusion partitioning and interdendritic segregation in mold slag, presenting crucial insights into the control of non-metallic inclusions and enhancement of steel quality.
