Abstract

Language:

In Morocco, numerous metal sulphide mineralizations have been exploited by small and medium-scale mining companies, resulting in significant environmental concerns. This study examines the deleterious effects of mining activities, including the incorporation of heavy metals into aqueous environments due to the dissolution of unstable minerals under oxidizing conditions. Two main processes of contamination, geological and anthropogenic, are addressed. The mining industry, essential to Morocco's economy, faces challenges due to abandoned sites that generate lasting socio-economic and environmental problems. These issues manifest through landscape degradation, groundwater pollution, destruction of habitats, and soil contamination. Furthermore, the exclusion of mining communities from sustainable development projects hinders local and regional advancement. This research calls for a comprehensive sustainable development strategy that integrates environmental, social, and economic dimensions to address the pressing issues linked to mining in Morocco, highlighting the need for a coordinated approach to mitigate the adverse impacts of the industry on society and the ecosystem.
