Abstract

Language:

This volume compiles peer-reviewed papers from the “Materials Processing Fundamentals” symposium held at the TMS 2013 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Antonio, Texas. It focuses on the fundamentals, synthesis, analysis, design, monitoring, and control of metals, materials, and metallurgical processes. Covered topics include experimental, analytical, physical, and computational modeling of physical chemistry and thermodynamics, as well as transport phenomena in processes involving iron, steel, non-ferrous metals, and composites. Special emphasis is placed on second-phase particles such as non-metallic inclusions and gas bubbles, including their nucleation, growth, motion, and removal. Additional themes are the physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics of rare earth metal production and refining, and the control of industrial extraction and processing operations through novel sensors, online sampling and analysis, and real-time process control models. The proceedings contain more than 35 full papers selected from over 60 submitted abstracts.
