The intensification of gold thiourea leaching from filtration waste (Košice, Slovakia) using mechanical activation as a pretreatment step has been studied. The research aimed to enhance gold recovery from waste materials through the electrolysis process. The methodology involved mechanical activation of the filtration waste in a planetary mill, followed by leaching in an acid thiourea solution. Results indicated that the leaching of the untreated sample yielded 65% gold dissolution, while mechanical activation improved this significantly to 99%. Moreover, the optimum redox potential for effective electrolysis was determined to be between 500-523 mV, facilitating 99.79% gold extraction from the activated sample. The mechanical activation treatment resulted in a dramatic increase in the specific surface area of the waste, from 0.7 m²/g to a maximum of 13.5 m²/g, indicating that the physical and chemical changes induced by the activation process played a crucial role in enhancing gold extraction efficiency. These findings suggest that mechanical activation can substantially improve the performance of electrolysis in extracting gold from waste materials.
