Linear scan voltammetry was employed to investigate the reactions occurring during the cyanidation of petzite (Ag₄AuTe₂). The study revealed that gold oxidation from petzite necessitates more stringent oxidising conditions compared to pure gold, and it results in a lower current which correlates to the reaction rate. Furthermore, tellurium oxidation manifests at comparable potentials in both water and cyanide solutions; however, its reaction is somewhat hindered in water as a result of the stability of the precious metals present. Notably, pre-treatment of petzite to oxidise tellurium without cyanide prior to gold extraction demonstrated moderate success in enhancing recovery. This research contributes to the understanding of gold and silver tellurides' behavior in cyanidation processes, highlighting the complexities associated with gold recovery from such minerals, and proposes an electrochemical method to ultimately improve the leach rates and recovery outcomes of gold from petzite.
