This study reports new results on the thermally assisted beneficiation of low-grade iron ores (LGIOs) with varying hematite-to-goethite ratios, using rapid high-flux radiation heating and slow convective heating. The objective was to systematically assess the influence of heating rate and ore mineralogy on thermal decomposition, phase transformation, and beneficiation performance. Experiments were conducted in the temperature range of 300 to 700 °C to analyze how different heating rates affect mineral conversion and microstructural changes. Findings revealed that the LGIOs, with initial iron content between 51.5 and 55 wt pct, exhibited distinct behaviors under fast heating conditions, achieving nearly full conversion for specific hematite-to-goethite ratios at 700 °C. High- flux radiation facilitated rapid decomposition and transformation, resulting in hematite with increased surface area and reduced recrystallization compared to slow-heated samples. Additionally, the heating rate influenced the microstructure significantly at elevated temperatures. When integrated with magnetic separation, the high-flux radiation method achieved enhanced Fe grades and recoveries depending on the ore type. Results underscore the correlation between ore mineralogy and heating parameters, providing insights for optimizing beneficiation techniques.
