Heavy metal contamination of soils resulting from mining and smelting is causing major concern due to the potential risks involved. In this study, the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI) were employed along with ordinary and indicator kriging interpolation methods to evaluate the ecological risks associated with copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni) contamination in soils around selected copper mines in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. The findings revealed that the contamination levels were significant, with Igeo estimations indicating high contamination for Zn (92.6%) and Cu (66.1%), while all Igeo assessments for manganese (Mn) reflected extraordinary contamination in agricultural soil samples. Moreover, the ecological risk assessments indicated considerable hazards for Zn and Mn, along with a persistent high environmental risk from Cu across all samples. Geostatistical analyses suggested that the spatial distribution of Zn, Cu, and Mn varied significantly across the region, with recommendations made for enhanced environmental monitoring and restoration initiatives at industrial sites.
