El circuito de molienda a Selbaie consiste en un molino semiautógeno y un molino de bolas en un circuito cerrado. El amperaje del motor se utiliza para controlar el rendimiento del molino. Este sistema estabiliza el circuito, pero no optimiza activamente el rendimiento del mismo. Se desarrolló un sistema experto para auxiliar la optimización del circuito manipulando los puntos de ajuste de los bucles de control proporcional-integral existentes. El sistema se implementó con el paquete del sistema experto Comdale /C y ha estado funcionando desde mayo de 1992. El sistema experto ha resultado en un aumento neto en el tonelaje de 7tph y una disminución de $210,000 en los costos anuales de medios de molienda. Se describe el desarrollo del sistema y se presentan los beneficios derivados.
