Abstract

Language:

Flash smelting is an industrial process primarily utilized for the production of molten Cu-rich matte from fine Cu-Fe-S flotation concentrates. This method involves blowing dried concentrate particles into a hot furnace filled with oxygen-rich gas, promoting partial oxidation of iron and sulfur, which results in heat generation and the melting of the oxidized particles into a Cu-rich matte containing approximately 65% copper, alongside Cu-barren slag containing about 1% copper. The molten matte and slag fall into separate layers within the furnace, with the matte being extracted for further oxidation and conversion to metallic copper. The slag undergoes treatment for copper recovery, after which it is either stockpiled or sold. The context of the process is illustrated through various figures depicting industrial flash furnaces and their integration within the broader coppermaking flowsheet. Additionally, the document discusses related operations including the production of nickel-rich matte and outlines key chemical reactions involved in the smelting process. This chapter serves to elucidate the operational and chemical dynamics of flash smelting in the extraction and processing of copper and nickel from sulfide ores.
