The study investigates the vertical distribution of minerals in a tailing impoundment from an abandoned manganese mine in Hokkaido, Japan, aiming to characterize the chemical forms of heavy metals and evaluate their environmental impact. Utilizing X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and a combination of two sequential extraction methods, the research reveals that silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) account for over 80% of the mass balance detected via XRF, predominantly found in mineral forms like clay, oxides, and pyrite. This indicates that the sampling site is chemically stable. The effectiveness of the two sequential extraction methods is confirmed, demonstrating their complementary nature in analyzing sediments with diverse mineral compositions. The findings contribute to our understanding of the environmental implications of heavy metals in mining tailings, underlining the necessity for thorough characterization of chemical forms to better assess potential contamination and inform remediation strategies.
