Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slags are by-products of the conversion of pig iron to steel, containing valuable components such as C2S, C2F, Fe1/C0 xO, CaO, Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3. This study aims to assess the hydration properties of BOF slag pastes under various temperatures and environmental conditions. Utilizing methods such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, the research provides insights into the compressive strengths of the pastes over periods of 7, 28, 90, and 190 days. The results indicate that BOF slags with 40% C2S exhibit promising mechanical strengths. Additionally, hydration tests in water reveal swelling due to the hydration of CaO present in the slags. The study proposes a lime extinction procedure, which offers a more effective alternative to the standard PR NF EN 13282-2, successfully mitigating the volume expansion of pastes, thus substantially enhancing the compressive strengths. The findings underline the potential of BOF slags as a resource in hydraulic binder applications.
