Abstract

Language:

This paper addresses the effectiveness and misconceptions associated with single coat inorganic zinc silicate (IZS) coatings for protecting steelwork in various atmospheric environments. The primary objective is to elucidate the fallacies surrounding IZS coatings, which, while economical and allowing rapid application, also pose certain disadvantages and costs. A literature review and practical evidence are employed to explore common myths and misunderstandings, particularly regarding the mechanisms of protection provided by these coatings. The findings suggest that while IZS coatings can effectively protect steel through preferential corrosion of zinc particles, misconceptions about their cathodic protection capabilities can lead to misuse and failures. The paper discusses critical issues in the selection, application, and maintenance of IZS coatings, aiming to inform better practices within the industry. The insights presented in this paper are essential for professionals involved in the use of inorganic zinc coatings, helping to promote a more informed understanding of their properties and limitations.
