Silk is a group of fibrous proteins that has been used for centuries in the textile industry and as surgical sutures. Silk, in addition to its unique mechanical properties, possesses other beneficial attributes such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, anti-bacterial properties, thermal stability, controlled degradation features, and ease of sterilization. These qualities make silk a promising material for biomedical applications. Although silk naturally exists in the form of fibers, synthetic techniques can manipulate its processing into various morphologies, including scaffolds, films, hydrogels, microcapsules, and micro- and nanospheres. The biotechnological production of silk proteins further expands the possible applications of silk in the biomedical field. This review presents an overview of silk proteins, detailing their properties, synthesis, and diverse uses. The findings underscore silk's potential in enhancing biomedical applications and provide insights into its future in dental engineering.
