This paper is concerned with the electrolysis processes aimed at the production and refining of metals, collectively referred to as electrometallurgy. The objective of this study is to present the key aspects of electrometallurgy, including electrochemical, energetic/economic, and environmental considerations. Methodologically, the paper analyzes the peculiarities of electrorefining and electrowinning in both aqueous electrolytes and molten salts, while examining the influence of energetic parameters such as cell voltage and current efficiency on the economic justification of the electrolysis process. The findings highlight that electrolysis represents a significantly cleaner technology compared to traditional pyrometallurgical methods of metal production and refining, underscoring its potential environmental advantages. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the multifaceted nature of electrometallurgy and its implications for energy consumption and environmental sustainability.
