Preliminary studies have been conducted to characterize particulate emissions from the Ampellum S.A. copper smelter located in Zlatna, Romania. Particulates were collected on polycarbonate filters through air pump apparatus and from lichen surfaces. The mass of total suspended particulates (TSP) and PM10 ranged from 19 to 230 μg/m3 and 3 to 146 μg/m3, respectively, influenced by wind direction and distance from the smelter. Analysis of downwind collection filters revealed a mean equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) of 0.94 μm (s.d. 1.1), predominantly composed of anglesite (PbSO4) along with a mixture of silicates and various metal-bearing phases. Larger particles (>5 μm ESD) were infrequently observed due to limited sampling durations. An alternative analysis of the lichen Acarospora smaragdula, situated downwind from the smelter, uncovered a wider range of particulates (<5 to 100 µm in diameter), including Fe-rich spherules bearing Pb- and S-rich encrustations. The study discusses the implications for health regarding these particulates and makes recommendations for future research efforts.
