Leaching of platinum and palladium with alkaline cyanide solutions has been shown to be feasible for various leach modes, typically occurring at elevated temperatures. This study investigates the effects of temperature, free cyanide, and base metal concentrations on the adsorption of platinum group metals (PGMs) onto granular activated carbon from pregnant leach solutions. Using experimental data, it was observed that increased temperatures augment the adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold cyanide. However, results indicated a decrease in the total amount of PGMs adsorbed after consecutive contacts with increasing temperatures. Specifically, after four contacts, 99% of the total Pt and Pd were adsorbed at 25 °C versus 85% of Pt and 83% of Pd at 50 °C, with no notable difference in gold adsorption at these temperatures. Furthermore, the detrimental effects of free cyanide and the presence of base metals such as copper and nickel on the adsorption of PGMs increased with temperature. These findings highlight critical factors influencing the efficiency of PGM recovery processes in hydrometallurgy.
