This report presents the operation of a segmented Hall thruster utilizing low-sputtering carbon-velvet electrodes, which were investigated to improve performance and longevity compared to conventional materials. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of these electrodes in reducing erosion and enhancing the electrical efficiency of the thruster. Experimental setups were deployed to test various operational parameters of the thruster, including thrust, specific impulse, and erosion rates of the electrodes. Results indicated that the segmented design significantly reduced sputtering, thereby increasing the lifespan of the thruster while maintaining high performance levels. Additionally, the carbon-velvet electrodes demonstrated improved electrical properties, resulting in enhanced overall efficiency. These findings suggest that segmented Hall thrusters with low-sputtering materials may offer a viable solution for next-generation propulsion systems in space applications.
