This paper explores the historical and current methods of atmospheric leaching of nickel laterites, specifically focusing on sulphuric acid leaching processes for nickel saprolite and garnierite ores. The objective is to summarize insights from previous studies and advancements in the jarosite and goethite processes, which are crucial for iron precipitation and effective nickel and cobalt recovery. Methodologically, the paper reviews various flowsheets proposed and tested since the late 1990s, emphasizing the benefits of simultaneous atmospheric leaching, iron precipitation, and acid regeneration for both limonite and saprolite ores. The outcomes demonstrate the commercialized efficiencies of processes utilizing alkali jarosite/alunite for iron control, as well as developments in sequencing leaching approaches based on goethite. This systematic investigation provides essential insights into the necessary downstream impurity removal strategies for enhancing the recovery of nickel and cobalt from leach solutions, highlighting the significance of these advanced leaching methodologies in the field of mineral processing.
