Abstract

Language:

This paper investigates the performance and repair methodologies of single coat inorganic zinc silicate (IZS) coatings that have been in use for over sixty years. The objective is to address common misconceptions regarding the difficulty of repairing IZS coatings, which have been perceived as challenging due to their unique composition. A thorough review of the existing literature and case studies is conducted, alongside the presentation of results from repair trials conducted in South Australia and Victoria. The methodology involves analyzing breakdown mechanisms of IZS coatings and existing repair procedures, including spot blasting and reapplication techniques. Results indicate that contrary to some expert claims, the repair of inorganic zinc coatings can be achieved easily with standard surface preparation and application methods. The findings highlight that such coatings can be maintained economically while continuing to offer superior long-term performance. These insights aim to contribute to the field by dispelling myths surrounding IZS repairs and promoting effective maintenance strategies.
