Abstract

Language:

Sustainable Development issues are increasingly significant in fostering consensus among stakeholders for optimal resource utilization across the globe. This paper discusses the outcomes of a workshop held at the Universidade do Porto in Portugal under the auspices of IMAAC and CYTED-XIII, focusing on the intersection of the mineral extraction industries and sustainability challenges. The objective was to unite experts in presenting and discussing the sustainable practices linked to these industries. The methodology involved interactive presentations, discussions, and site visits to various mining operations, including the SOMINCOR mine in Portugal and the BOLIDEN facility in Spain, where key environmental management issues were highlighted. Participants engaged in thorough deliberations on identified solutions to pressing challenges such as acid mine drainage and decommissioning protocols. The integration of real-case studies provided a framework for applying sustainable development principles to the mineral extraction sector. The report captures the essence of the discussions and the insights gleaned on improving sustainability practices in mining operations.
