This paper explores the relevance of dairy industry research to extensive grazing industries, emphasizing the reliance on grazed pasture as a cost-effective feed source for dairy farmers. It aims to investigate various factors influencing pasture intake by cattle, including grazing management, fertilizer application, stocking rate, and pasture allocation. The methodology includes a review of theories regarding pasture intake control, highlighting grazing behavior and rumen fill as key factors. Recent experiments conducted in Victoria examined the impact of increasing pasture allowance on voluntary dry matter intake, revealing that intake plateaus at 60 to 70 kg DM/cow/day under specific conditions. Critical findings also suggest a concerning imbalance in mineral ratios, such as calcium and phosphorus, potentially affecting animal health and productivity in dairy systems. The paper concludes that a better understanding of pasture limitations can help farmers optimize their practices, thereby enhancing the competitive edge of their livestock operations. This work ultimately urges better grazing management to sustain productivity levels in dairy, beef, and sheep industries reliant on grazed pastures.
