Hexavalent chromium has been restricted in the European automotive and electronics industries due to its toxicity, leading to a search for alternatives in surface coatings. This study aims to evaluate the environmental and technical performance of thermal spray processes (Atmospheric Plasma Spraying and High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) and laser cladding as replacements for hard chromium coatings. An optimization of these coating processes is proposed to ensure both sustainable and effective industrial applications. The research employs Life Cycle Assessment to gauge the environmental impacts of the coatings, a dimension that has been overlooked in the existing literature. Two materials, stainless steel and self-fluxing NiCrBSi alloy, were tested on a steel substrate, with a focus on their resistance to corrosion as measured by salt spray tests. The results indicate that the dry coatings, particularly the NiCrBSi variant, offer promising alternatives to traditional electrolytic hard chromium plating in terms of durability and environmental performance. This study contributes to the field by highlighting the potential of ecodesign in surface coating technologies.
