AngloGold Ashanti
The Mongbwalu project, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), was designed as a small-scale mining operation intended to expand following regional exploration efforts. This study discusses the status and progression of the project as of 2012, highlighting that preparatory work has been completed but the project has been suspended pending further technical reviews. The initial plan estimated an upfront investment of $345 million, anticipating annual gold production of approximately 130,000 ounces in the first three years at a cash cost of $760 per ounce. Key developments included the use of portable drill rigs to enhance drilling efficiency while minimizing environmental impact through reduced infrastructure footprint. Road infrastructure upgrades and the establishment of an exclusion zone to separate mining activities from artisanal miners were significant advancements made during the year. Additionally, the first phase of a hydropower plant refurbishment was completed, ensuring reliable power for the operation and local communities. The engagement with artisanal miners has been crucial for maintaining safety and reducing conflict in the area. This project exemplifies the complexities and challenges of mining development in the DRC, with an emphasis on sustainability and community relations.
