This document provides an introduction to the Metallurgy and Material Science Lab, aiming to expose students to fundamental techniques employed in metallurgical practices. The primary objective is to help students determine the mechanical properties of materials under varying loading conditions and explore the microstructural attributes of alloys. A hands-on methodology is implemented, where students engage in procedures such as sectioning, grinding, polishing, etching, and photomicrography using optical microscopes equipped with digital cameras. Additionally, the lab emphasizes tensile and impact testing on standardized samples to illustrate the strengths and limitations of different materials. By integrating practical laboratory work with theoretical lectures, students gain a comprehensive overview of metallographic evaluations used across diverse industries, including aerospace, automotive, and construction. The course outcomes include the ability to prepare test specimens per standards, observe and analyze microstructures, perform hardness testing, and execute heat treatment of steels, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience for participants.
