Abstract

Language:

The production of aluminum through the Hall-Héroult process generates spent pot lining (SPL) waste, which poses disposal challenges due to its classification as hazardous material. This study aims to evaluate an innovative approach to repurpose SPL in producing eco-cements, thereby mitigating environmental issues associated with its disposal. A new method involving an energy-efficient, low-temperature clinkering process is developed, wherein a raw mix of SPL, lime, calcium sulfate, and tailings sand is subjected to a two-stage clinkering process. The process includes a soaking phase at 800 °C followed by clinkering at 1000 °C, yielding a soft clinker that is ground to meet specific fineness criteria. The resulting cements exhibit significant inclusion of SPL, with up to 20% by weight incorporated into the raw mix, and 28% in the clinker, aligning with Indian standard specifications for Ordinary Portland Cement. The SPL eco-cements retain desirable physical properties, indicating their potential viability as a sustainable construction material. Such innovations suggest that the aluminum industry can not only address the disposal of SPL but can also contribute to the development of eco-friendly building materials.
