The ternary oxides M5-xTa11 + x/5O30 (M = Tl, Rb, H3O, Na) have been synthesized by reaction of Ta2O5 with Tl2O3 at 950°C and from the thallium phase by ionic exchange. The basic framework Ta11O30 is built from pyrochlore blocks and octahedra sheets reminiscent of hexagonal tungsten bronze. Non-stoichiometry has been demonstrated through density measurements, ionic conductivity studies, and T1 (longitudinal relaxation time) determination for the thallium phase across several x values between 20 and 150°C. Partial substitution of Ta by W allows for the establishment of a bidimensional non-stoichiometric range within the Tl2O-Ta2O5-WO3 system. A phase with the hexagonal tungsten bronze structure is obtained in the tantalum-rich portion of the Tl2O-Ta2O5 system, specifically characterized as TiTa3,4O9, which is isotypic with KTa3,4O9.
