Abstract

Language:

This document is a set of educational notes on the basic principles and processes of metallurgy, aimed at +2 level (higher secondary) computer science students. It begins by defining key terms such as minerals, ores, and gangue, and outlines the general steps in metal extraction: concentration of the ore, production of crude metal, and refining. Various methods of ore concentration (gravity separation, froth flotation, magnetic separation, leaching) and conversion to oxides (calcination, roasting) are described, followed by reduction techniques including smelting and the role of flux and slag. The text then covers several refining methods such as liquation, distillation, electro-refining, zone refining, vapour phase refining, and chromatographic methods. Specific extraction processes for aluminium, copper, iron, and zinc are presented with key reactions and furnace details, along with a brief description of types of iron (pig, cast, wrought). Finally, the thermodynamic principles underlying metallurgy are introduced through Gibbs free energy and Ellingham diagrams to explain feasibility and choice of reducing agents in metal extraction.
