This study assesses the potential of mining to serve as a sustainable livelihood source in the Kendujhar District of Odisha, India. The objective is to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of mining activities on local communities and to identify the benefits and detriments associated with this sector. Employing a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, demographic analyses, and economic assessments, the research focuses on a comprehensive data analysis from 2012 to 2013. The results indicate that while mining presents certain economic opportunities, including income generation and employment, it also raises significant concerns regarding environmental degradation and community displacement. Further, aspects such as education and housing conditions are influenced by mining operations, highlighting a mixed impact of this industry on the overall welfare of the local populations. The findings underscore the need for balanced policies that promote sustainable mining practices while safeguarding the interests and rights of affected communities.
