This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of heat treatment's role in developing the microstructure and properties of metallic materials, with a focus on commercially significant applications. The course covers the theoretical framework surrounding heat treatment, including the kinetic principles of solid-state transformations and the influence of time on phase transformations. Special emphasis is placed on interpreting IT and CT diagrams to predict transformations and the resulting microstructures. Key learning outcomes include the students' ability to explain the necessity of heat treatment and its effects on the final properties of products. The curriculum encompasses the study of hardenability in steels, the factors influencing it, and the application of hardenability curves for selecting steels in various applications. Additional topics include the effects of thermal gradients and phase transformations on distortion and residual stress in heat-treated products, as well as the heat treatment of selected non-ferrous alloys and ferrous alloys. Overall, this course aims to equip students with a fundamental understanding of modern heat treatment processes and reheating principles.
