This paper investigates the composition and electrochemical behavior of nickel matte with the aim of understanding its implications for leaching and refining processes in acidic solutions. The study begins with a comparison of varied nickel mattes produced globally, exploring their leaching and processing characteristics. Focused investigations center on the fundamental reactivity of nickel sulphides and nickel matte in both chloride and sulphate media, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms underlying different leaching systems. Specific attention is given to the influence of copper on matte reactivity, particularly for low copper mattes produced by WMC. The experimental methodology involved the synthesis of nickel sulfide minerals and electrochemical studies conducted on various nickel matte samples obtained from nickel companies. Detailed chemical analyses and microscopic examinations were performed to ascertain the mineral composition and texture. Results indicate significant variations in reactivity, dictated by the local resources and existing infrastructure of the refining company, which influences the choice of leaching system. This research highlights the necessity of understanding these factors to optimize nickel matte processing for effective recovery of valuable metals.
