Severe water shortage caused by El-Nino has created life-threatening drought conditions globally, forcing people to seek water alternatives. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of membrane technology for treating lake water, mine water, and tube well water to augment fresh water production for reuse. A laboratory bench-scale dead-end test rig was utilized to evaluate the performance of commercial flat-sheet nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, specifically NF270 and BW30. The analysis included the assessment of both source and treated water on parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), color, total suspended solids (TSS), pH, and temperature. The permeate water quality post-filtration was compared against the National Water Quality Standard (NWQS) of Malaysia to substantiate the reuse viability of membrane technology. The results indicated that the permeate water produced by both NF270 and BW30 membranes met the NWQS Class III standards, confirming suitability for applications in livestock drinking and irrigation purposes.
