This paper initially provides a brief overview of Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited (Zincor), comparing original design parameters of the Zincor roasters to current operational practices and outlining requirements for efficient roasting. It addresses operational problems faced during the early to mid-1990s and describes an investigation aimed at improving overall roaster availability. The study details the historical use and development of oxygen in the Zincor roasting operation, including operational experiences linked to its application. A critical aspect of the findings highlights that control of off-gas temperature and oxygen partial pressure is essential for successful operations. Notably, the introduction of oxygen enrichment has correlated with a downtime increase of less than 1.5% per annum. Furthermore, the modeling of the roasting process for predictive purposes has served as a valuable control tool to support sustained operation under oxygen-enriched conditions.
