Abstract

Language:

The extraction of gadolinium was investigated using Cloud Point Extraction (CPE) with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) as the chelating agent. This study aimed to analyze the structure of the Gd3þ complex within Triton X114 micelles through log-log assessment of extraction data. A notable 3:1 ratio of 8-HQ to Gd3þ was established. The efficiency of CPE was compared to conventional liquid-liquid extraction using chloroform. The research delineated the parameters influencing the extraction process in both media. Remarkably, quantitative extrication of Gd3þ was achieved at pH 5.5 in the CPE method utilizing a ratio of 10, whereas a ratio of 500 was mandated for the solvent extraction process with chloroform. This indicates enhanced mass action of extractants in the CPE format as opposed to traditional solvent extraction methods. Furthermore, while a higher extraction constant was determined for CPE, the formation of adducts within the CPE system could not be experimentally validated. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the optimization of rare earth element extraction techniques.
