Abstract

Language:

Considering the subtractive trend of the sulfide and high-grade zinc ores globally and in Iran, there has been a growing interest in extracting zinc from low-grade oxide ores. This study focuses on the leaching kinetics of low-grade zinc oxide ore from the Mehdi-abad mine, emphasizing the main mineral, Hemimorphite, and its association with other minerals. Through experiments utilizing sulfuric acid, various factors affecting the dissolution rate such as particle size, reaction temperature, acid concentration, and solid percentage were analyzed. The Taguchi method was employed to optimize conditions, yielding a zinc recovery rate of approximately 78% under optimal conditions: a particle size of 106μm, leaching time of one hour, temperature at 45°C, acid concentration of 15%, and solid percentage of 15%. Kinetic studies revealed that the leaching of zinc minerals was predominantly controlled by the diffusion rate through the product layer, demonstrating an activation energy of 5 KJ/mol and compliance with the 1- (2/3. x) – (1- x) 2/3 = k. t model. This research offers vital insights into improving zinc extraction from low-grade ores in the Mehdi-abad region.
