Bauxite, first named by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845, is an ore discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near Les Beaux de Provence, France. Originally considered an alumina hydrate, later thermal analysis revealed it to be a mixture of mono- and tri-hydrates. Although mining began around 1860 in Auriol, France, the initial production was primarily for non-metallurgical purposes, notably alumina for textile dyeing. The introduction of the Hall-Héroult process increased the demand for alumina for aluminum smelting. Despite this shift, non-metallurgical applications of bauxite flourished, leading to its use in refractories, abrasives, cements, and various aluminum chemicals. By the late 19th century, exportation of bauxite from France initiated a range of industrial uses, primarily supplying aluminum sulfate and related products to European manufacturers. This multifaceted utility of bauxite laid the groundwork for its ascent as a critical mineral in the aluminum production industry, highlighting its evolving role from a simple ore to a valuable resource in numerous applications. The ongoing demand for high-alumina, low-alkali materials further cements its importance in modern industrial processes.
