Abstract

Language:

The Merrill-Crowe or Cementation process is employed for the concentration and purification of gold and silver extracted from cyanide solutions. This study investigates the kinetic aspects of traditional cementation and a novel electrocoagulation (EC) technique for recovering precious metals from cyanide solutions. Initially, the fundamentals of both processes are introduced, followed by a comprehensive analysis of the kinetic conditions and outcomes associated with the removal of gold and silver. The solid products generated during the EC process are characterized using X-ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that cementation using suspended zinc particles follows well-behaved first-order kinetics, while the EC process proves to be an excellent method for the extraction of gold and silver from cyanide solutions using iron electrodes. Notably, the experimental EC reactor successfully eliminated 99.5% of both metals within five minutes. This study reinforces the potential of EC as a rapid and efficient alternative for the recovery of precious metals, positioning it as a favorable option within the field of hydrometallurgy.
