Abstract

Language:

In compliance with Directives 91/157/CEE and 91/338/CEE regarding spent batteries containing hazardous materials, this study proposes laboratory electrochemical methods for recovering valuable metals, specifically nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd), from spent nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. The paper details rapid analyses and control techniques for assessing Ni and Cd concentrations, utilizing atomic absorption (AA) spectroscopy conducted on a novAA 400 G spectrometer equipped with a graphite oven and analyzed using WinAAS 3.17.0 software for data evaluation and presentation. Additionally, the research employs a hydride generator (HS 55-1) and examines the deposit components using a SEM-EDAX electron microscope (Inspect S - FEI-Holland). The methods developed provide a comprehensive cookbook for both elements, aimed at optimizing recovery processes while addressing the environmental concerns posed by hazardous battery waste. This investigation highlights the importance of effective metal recovery as a crucial step towards sustainable waste management and minimizing the environmental impact of toxic metals present in spent batteries.
