The emerging demands on higher steel grades call for improvements in the operation of production units and a corresponding increase in automated processes, necessitating viable functions for international steel producers. The avoidance of slag carry-over to secondary metallurgy processes is crucial for achieving high-quality steel grades and reducing alloy usage to offset slag residues in downstream units. This paper discusses the automatic tapping procedure in BOF converters, which will be enhanced through the implementation of precise measurements utilized in advanced steel plants. Automatic tapping offers several advantages, including reduced slag carry-over, improved yield, increased reproducibility, and a safer working environment, all while operating with the minimum required crew. The procedure is adaptable to both new and retrofitted installations, ensuring full automation through an amalgamation of position measurements, an onboard weighing system, and safety equipment such as pyrometers. Additional functionalities may include automatic slagging into the slag pot car, facilitating simultaneous positioning with converter tilting. Overall, the proposed automatic tapping system is designed to significantly enhance efficiency and safety in modern steelworks, meeting the industry's evolving challenges.
