The study investigates the metal contamination of farming soils in Suszec commune, located in southern Poland, specifically influenced by nearby industrial activities from the Upper Silesian Industrial Region and local sources like coal mines. The objective was to assess the levels of nine heavy metals: As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn utilizing various indices including the geoaccumulation index, enrichment factor, contamination factor, and degree of contamination. Methodologically, soil samples were analyzed to determine the concentration of these metals and to evaluate their ecological impact. Results indicated elevated levels of cadmium, lead, arsenic, antimony, and mercury, while other elements displayed concentrations similar to those found in the Earth’s crust or indicated metal depletion within the soil (EF < 1). These findings underscore the significance of monitoring heavy metal pollution in farming areas to ensure soil quality and safe agricultural practices.
