This paper presents an overview of the Norwegian Ferro-alloy Industry and outlines the model for research cooperation between SINTEF, NTNU, and the industry. The objective is to illustrate the research being conducted in pyrometallurgy through specific examples including the characterization of manganese ores and carbon materials. The methodology involves laboratory and pilot-scale experiments to study reaction mechanisms, complemented by industrial off-gas measurements. Additionally, the paper discusses educational opportunities at NTNU related to these research initiatives. The results highlight significant historical engagements of Norwegian industry in producing various ferro-alloys, as well as recent advancements influenced by global market demands, particularly in silicon production for solar cells. It emphasizes the collaborative nature of research funded by the Norwegian Research Council, which enables both competitive and non-competitive projects to flourish, reflecting Norway's commitment to innovation in pyrometallurgy. This comprehensive approach not only enhances scientific understanding but also strengthens industrial applications in the field.
