Abstract

Language:

Binders have been suggested as an aid for agglomeration to improve copper recovery in heap leaching operations. However, it has not been established if the use of binders would negatively affect the solvent extraction process, which is used to purify the pregnant leach solution from the heaps and remove any contaminants. This study aimed to assess the effects of various binders on the copper solvent extraction process. Controlled studies were conducted with a focus on two types of binders: a polyacrylamide and a waste treatment additive, which did not interfere with the solvent extraction process, versus a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and tall oil pitch, which negatively impacted the extraction efficiency. The results indicated that the former binders can be utilized without detrimental effects, while the latter should be avoided in copper heap leaching facilities. The findings have implications for optimizing copper recovery processes and minimizing operational costs by carefully selecting agglomeration binders.
