This report presents the results of leach optimisation tests conducted by Mintek for Kamoto Operating Limited, aimed at improving the leaching efficiencies and recoveries of copper and cobalt from an oxide/sulphide concentrate. The objective was to address the low leaching efficiencies currently experienced by the plant, which adversely affects recovery rates of these valuable metals. Methodology involved the analysis of four distinct process streams from the hydrometallurgical plant, including copper oxide concentrate and leach residue samples. Through a series of controlled tests, various parameters influencing leaching efficiency were systematically evaluated. The findings indicate significant improvements in both copper and cobalt recoveries when specific adjustments to the leaching process were implemented. Optimisation measures included the manipulation of leaching conditions, resulting in enhanced extraction rates. These results provide valuable insights for the client, suggesting potential pathways to increase metal recoveries while addressing processing challenges associated with the oxide and sulphide concentrates. This study highlights the importance of tailored metallurgical approaches in optimizing leach recovery processes in hydrometallurgical operations.
