Abstract

Language:

This paper reviews recent developments aimed at improving the mining sector’s contribution to sustainable development. Mineral endowments are often perceived as a ‘curse’ by development and environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs), counterproductive to long-term growth and poverty reduction, sometimes seen as antithetical to sustainable development in developing countries. However, this paper argues that this is not an inevitable rule, asserting that the mining sector has significant potential to catalyze sustainable development and meet the millennium development goals, provided that adequate governance and social and environmental safeguards are established. The analysis considers the diversity within the mining sector, expressing concern over the under-management of artisanal and small-scale mining, which remains a growing issue in developing nations. The paper highlights that without improved management of this sector, efforts to enhance the mining industry's role in sustainable development will be considerably hindered. It further explores how the extractive industries, particularly mining, can reconcile their existence of depleting finite resources with the principles of sustainability.
