To address the challenges of losses in the distribution system and electricity costs, this paper focuses on power factor correction through the installation of capacitors in sugar mills. The primary objective is to investigate the potential for improving the power factor from 0.8 to 0.95 by applying suitable capacitors close to inductive loads, specifically induction motors. The study employs a case analysis of a sugar mill's power distribution setup, examining the effects of reactive power on the overall power factor. Results indicate that by installing the appropriate capacitors, significant improvements to the power factor are achievable, thereby facilitating reductions in distribution losses and enhancing electricity efficiency. The findings also highlight future opportunities for addressing total harmonic distortion related to non-linear loads. This research underscores the critical importance of power factor improvement in the sugar industry to optimize electrical energy usage and minimize operational costs.
