Abstract

Language:

The study is undertaken in the barite mining area of Mangampeta, located in the Kodur Mandal of Cuddapah District, Andhra Pradesh, India, to assess the water quality for its suitability for agricultural and domestic purposes. The research includes chemical analyses of water samples collected from mining and adjacent virgin areas, focusing on major ions, including silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulphate, chloride, and total dissolved solids. Various parameters such as hardness and sodium adsorption ratio were analyzed, revealing a significant difference in the sulphate content between mine and virgin waters, which ranges from 211 to 589 mg/l in mining areas, attributed to barite presence. Conversely, the virgin area samples showed a sulphate range of 1-20 mg/l. Bicarbonates and alkalinity were notably high in the virgin area, with concentrations between 262 to 1100 mg/l and 198 to 953 mg/l, respectively. According to the Gibb’s diagram, all samples fall within the rock dominance field. The evaluation indicates that water quality is generally suitable for both domestic and irrigation purposes.
