In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the introduction of an improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX 64N, aimed at enhancing copper recovery from various solutions, including dump leach liquors. This paper presents a summary of performance results following its implementation, highlighting its effectiveness and selectivity compared to its predecessor, LIX 64. The methodology involved the application of LIX 64N in operational settings across three commercial plants, where it demonstrated significant efficiency, achieving the designed output of 40,000 pounds of copper per day shortly after the startup of one of the plants. The findings indicate that LIX 64N maintains effective copper extraction even at concentrations as high as 15 g/l, albeit with some limitations in its operational pH range. Additionally, another plant was set to commence operation utilizing LIX 64N for the recovery of both copper and nickel. The overall results of this study underscore the advancement that LIX 64N represents in liquid ion exchange technology, as well as its promising applications in industrial operations.
