The energy requirement pattern of the world is growing, demanding more sustainable solutions to meet increasing consumption. This study aims to explore the potential of municipal solid waste (MSW) as an alternative energy source through energy recovery and power generation. Data on MSW composition in Benghazi, Libya, was collected from 1997 to 2009 to analyze waste enthalpy and its application in an incineration process. An incinerator with a capacity of 47,250 kg/h was identified to sustainably dispose of city waste for the next 15 years. The research employed a design of Rankine steam cycle to generate both power (PG) and combined heat power (CHP). Results demonstrated that the system could generate 13.1 MW of electrical power and, when combined with heat, could produce 6.8 million m³/year of desalinated water alongside 11.33 MW of electricity. The findings indicate that the designed CHP system holds significant promise for maximizing energy savings and providing a sustainable approach to waste management, emphasizing the importance of integrating waste-to-energy technologies to mitigate environmental challenges.
